چکیده

The connective tissue of the pubic symphysis of the female guinea pig undergoes a series of remarkable modifications during the estrus cycle and during pregnancy (1-3). Similar changes can be effected experimentally in the pubic symphysis of the castrated animal by appropriate treatment with steroid hormones and relaxin, making the symphysis especially suitable for investigation of the effects of hormones upon the metabolism of connective tissue. This paper is concerned with the effects of estrogen and relaxin upon the rate of incorporation in vitro of C14-labeled glycine into proteins of symphyseal connective tissue. In addition, the effects of these hormones upon the endogenous oxygen consumption of connective tissue slices have been investigated.

Distribution of radioactive carbon among certain amino acids of liver homogenate protein, following uptake experiments with labeled glycine.

Following the demonstration that C14-labeled glycine (glycine”) is taken up by the protein of cell-free homogenates of rat liver (l), it was pertinent to demonstrate that the radioactivity of the protein was due to incorporated amino acids and to identify the latter. Franta, Loftfield, and Miller (2), in studying the uptake of alanine* by liver slices, showed that a large percentage of the radi...

The incorporation of glycine-1-C14 by typhus rickettsiae.

A previous study has shown that under suitable conditions typhus rickettsiae can incorporate small but significant quantities of labeled methionine. For maximal uptake, adenosine 5’-triphosphate, glutamine, all of the naturally occurring amino acids, the mononucleotides, diphosphopyridine nucleotide, glutathione, and a soluble protein fraction from normal yolk sac tissues were required (1). In ...

Uptake and nitrate accumulation affected by partial replacement of nitrate-N with different source of amino acids in spinach and lettuce

As natural plant growth stimulators, amino acids are widely used to improve the yield and quality of crops. Change in enzymes activities of N assimilation (NR, NiR and GS), residual nitrate (NO3-), soluble protein content, and yield of spinach and lettuce plants were investigated under replacing 20% nitrate-N in the nutrient solution by L-glycine and blood meal amino acids. Seeds of the mention...

The utilization of glycine in the biosynthesis of hemoglobin.

Isotopic studies have demonstrated that glycine is used in the biosynthesis of hemoglobin. Glycine has been tagged in one of three ways: (a) with N’” in the amino group (l-3), (b) with Cl4 in the a-methylene carbon position (4), and (c) with Cl4 in the carboxyl group (5). When any of these three forms of glycine is fed to animals, the isotope is incorporated into hemoglobin, but interesting dif...
